Pressestimmen
“Acclaimed poet, playwright, and novelist Shange, takes readers on a kaleidoscopic journey through black womanhood in her first selected volume. The poems showcase vibrant narratives of black women who are neither solely saints nor sinners.” (Publisher’s Weekly Starred Review)"These powerfully swinging, jabbing, lamenting, testifying, and protesting poems deliver an array of voices sharing experiences sensual and violent, personal and communal, all catalyzed by the traumas and tragedies of racism and sexism and the transcendence of art, love, and hope.” (Booklist Review)“A revelation . . Shange is as fearless as ever in poems that reveal our humanity and pain.” (Essence)

It is hard to say "I love it!" to a book that disturbs, engages, inspires, and provokes quite as much as the poetry here. Ms Shange takes you where it's real, and my first exposure to her was in a college production of "For Colored Girls..." starring a very young Angela Bassett. Then, and now, it's a journey that isn't always comfortable but it is worthwhile. Being white, I also feel a little voyeuristic reading some of the poems-- experiences that connect to firsthand stories I've heard but I cannot claim to share. There were some particularly raw verses that made me put the book down, take a deep breath, walk around the room, or make a cup of tea. But I always came back and will be coming back as it sits by where I sit.
Zake is a favorite of mine. i love her unruliness, her sense of jazz.i've read all her books.i sat up all nite reading this one.
Amazing writing. Loved it!!
Amazing. Classic.
** Trigger warning for rape. **all things are possiblebut aint no colored magician in her right mindgonna make you whitei meanthis is blk magicyou lookin at(“my father is a retired magicianâ€)i haveta turn my television down sometimes cuzi cant stand to have white people/ shout at me/(“from okra to greensâ€)we need a god who bleeds nowwhose wounds are not the end of anything(“we need a god who bleeds nowâ€)WILD BEAUTY falls into that weird, nebulous category of “poems I’m not sure I completely understand, but am mostly smitten with anyway.†A mix of new and previously published poetry from Ntozake Shange, WILD BEAUTY is enchanting and seductive and, occasionally, raw AF. Shange explores wide-ranging issues, including race, gender, sexuality, love, the military-industrial complex, the police state, the process of creating art, and the centrality of music in her life. As is par for the course with poetry, I wasn’t convinced that I was always picking up what Shange put down, but I was happy to come along for the ride anyway. Well, more or less: it’s true that I did skim a few of the pieces, but these were few and far between.Among my favorites are “my father is a retired magicianâ€; “toussaintâ€; “live oakâ€; “irrepressibly bronze, beautiful & mineâ€; “rise up fallen fightersâ€; “7 tequilas goneâ€; “the stage goes to darknessâ€; “crooked womanâ€; “about atlantaâ€; “who needs a heartâ€; and “pages for a friend.†I fear that “crack annie†will stick with forever, though not in a good way; the poem is written from the pov of a mother who facilitates the rape of her seven-year-old daughter in exchange for drugs, and it is simply haunting. “ode to orlando†is as well, though in a more melancholy (as opposed to nauseating) way. Written in the days after the Pulse nightclub shooting, Shange reflects on how the tragedy did – and could have – impacted her own family. (Shange’s daughter is gay and has in fact been to the club.)CONTENTSPreface • xiPrólogo • xvTranslating Ntozake Shange • xixTraducir a Ntozake Shange • xxvwe need a god who bleeds now • 3from okra to greens • 5my father is a retired magician • 9for all my dead & loved ones • 13once there were quadroon balls • 17tango • 19toussaint • 21just as the del vikings stole my heart • 31on becomin successful • 33nappy edges (a cross country sojourn) • 35i heard eric dolphy in his eyes • 41expiriese girl wanted • 51lady in blue • 57take the A train • 59dream of pairing • 61lady in blue II • 63lotsa body & cultural heritage/ • 65loosening strings or give me an ‘A’ • 67never mind sister • 71a third generation geechee myth for yr birthday • 73i live in music • 77latin night is monday • 79mood indigo • 81lady in brown • 9118 march 1984 • 95live oak • 97box & pole • 99hands & holding • 101tropical dance • 105lovin you is ecstasy to me • 107between a dancer & a poet • 109new orleans nuptials • 113irrepressibly bronze, beautiful & mine • 117“if i go all the way without you where would i go?†• 125rise up fallen fighters • 131elegance in the extreme • 137chastening with honey • 139wrapping the wind • 143in the blueness • 1457 tequilas gone • 149the stage goes to darkness • 151telephones & other false gods • 155the old men • 167crooked woman • 169dressing our wounds in warm clothes • 173crack annie • 175about atlanta • 185who needs a heart • 191people of watts • 193lady in red • 197new world coro • 199walk, jump, fly • 203fame on all fours • 207lizard poem • 215five • 223pages for a friend • 231these blessings • 233a word is a miracle • 235an actual poem • 237ode to orlando • 239mama’s little baby • 234chicago in sanfrancisco & you • 245Acknowledgments • 249Credits and Permissions • 253
